The province of Viterbo, also known as Tuscia, has 60 municipalities, with Viterbo being its capital. It is found in the area of Italy called Etruria, which was once inhabited by the Etruscan civilization around the 7th century BC before they were succeeded by the ancient Romans in the 3rd century BC. As of 2015, it has a population of 321,955.
The area is known for its natural beauty of lush landscapes and volcanic formations, including Lake Bolsena and Lake Vico which were formed in volcanic craters, and thermal spas, or terme, which have been used since ancient Rome, as well as its enchanting medieval villages. The western part of Viterbo is known as the Maremma Laziale and it is characterized by coastal towns and low-lying plains, and includes such towns as Tarquinia and Tuscania known for their Etruscan archeological sites.
Although it was once the center of Etruscan civilization, it became more important during the Middle Ages when it became a refuge for Popes who clashed with the Holy Roman emperors.
Civita di Bagnoregio is a charming medieval village that unfortunately is slowly being destroyed. It was built on volcanic rock called “tuff” over sand and clay. Because of this, the land is slowly falling away from the hill on which the town was built upon due to earthquakes and a high amount of rainfall. Although only a handful of people still live there, there are many tourists who visit year round and enter the village by walking across a long footbridge that was built back in the 1950’s.
