Staying in a hotel in Italy, or in all of Europe for that matter, is not always the same as in the US.  What Europeans consider luxury can be considered average in the states.  Although they are clean and adequate for two people, the rooms can be quite small, which means that if a room’s rate is really cheap it will probably be so small that you will feel like the walls are closing in on you! The double rooms can have two single beds or one large bed which we consider here to be a double bed and not a queen, and sometimes this double bed is actually two twin beds put together.

If you like more room and more amenities while saving money, you can always rent an apartment or a house.  I’ve stayed in rented apartments and found them to be quite pleasant and cheaper than staying in a hotel room for the same amount of time.  Of course you would most likely have to do your own cooking or eat at restaurants, but sometimes it is a better option if you are staying with two or more people since you would have to reserve more than one hotel room to fit everyone.  Also, it makes you feel more like a local than a tourist.

Websites such as Hotels.com have good deals on hotels, as well as short and long-term rentals.  I like to read the customer reviews not only to find out the condition of the place, but also because you can get a lot of information regarding the area including where to eat, what attractions are around, where to get transportation if you’re not renting a car, etc.
